The LIVALL PikaBoost 2 turns any old bicycle into a powerful e-bike

E-bikes are great, but they're a lot more expensive than traditional bikes and often heavier, too. They can require maintenance and suffer from technical issues. But what if you could turn your traditional bicycle into an e-bike? That's the idea behind the LIVALL PikaBoost 2 — a compact, motorized device that attaches to your bicycle to add e-bike capability without replacing the bike you already own.

I got a chance to check out the PikaBoost 2 on the show floor at CES 2025. It seems to be a practical and relatively inexpensive way to get electric assist without having to replace the bicycle you already have.

The PikaBoost 2 uses a friction-drive system: it attaches to the back of the frame, extending out toward the rear tire. A rubber wheel at the end of the device rotates the tire when activated, controlled via a wired remote attached to the handlebar. No wheel removal or drivetrain modification is needed — installation is designed to take under a minute using the proprietary tool included in the kit.

Multiple riding modes are available, including workout mode (which adds resistance instead of reducing it), eco mode (pedal assist that only activates on hills), and cruise mode (steady power that removes the need to pedal continuously).

The battery is removable independently from the unit — you can detach and charge it without removing the PikaBoost 2 from the bike. The battery supports USB-PD 3.1 and QuickCharge 3.0 for fast charging. An upgraded battery option with extended range is available. For current specifications including range, weight limits, and tire compatibility requirements, visit the PikaBoost 2 product page.

What sets the PikaBoost 2 apart from other conversion kits is the friction-drive approach and ease of installation — no need to modify your existing drivetrain or source replacement wheels.

FAQs

Does the PikaBoost 2 work with any bicycle?
The PikaBoost 2 is designed to fit most conventional bicycles, but compatibility depends on rear tire width and frame geometry. Check the current compatibility requirements on the PikaBoost 2 product page before purchasing.

How difficult is installation?
Installation is designed to take under a minute using the proprietary tool included in the kit. No wheel removal or drivetrain modification is required — the device clamps to the frame and the rubber drive wheel contacts the rear tire.

What is the difference between eco mode and cruise mode?
Eco mode provides pedal assist only when needed — primarily on hills — conserving battery. Cruise mode provides steady power regardless of terrain, removing the need to pedal continuously. Workout mode adds resistance rather than assist, for training use.

Can I remove the battery without removing the whole unit?
Yes. The battery detaches from the unit independently, so you can carry it for charging without removing the PikaBoost 2 from the bike.
